Sicily, new museum opened at Palazzo Trigona in Piazza Armerina

The new museum at Palazzo Trigona in Piazza Armerina has been inaugurated. Free admission until August 31.

The new museum at Palazzo Trigona in Piazza Armerina has been inaugurated. “Piazza Armerina finally has its own museum,” said Regional Councillor for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity Alberto Samonà. "The new museum in Palazzo Trigona, the beating heart for the cultural offerings of Central Sicily, tells a unique story with a strong identity value. This place, in fact, is much more than a historical-architectural testimony: it is an opportunity to start a dialogue on the cultural development strategy of an entire area, in which historical-cultural testimonies are the strong point from which to start."

“The issue of inland areas,” the councilor added, “is measured not so much by the attractiveness of individual places, which in the Enna area is very high, but by the ability to succeed in increasing the average length of stay of visitors, so as to enhance other pregnant aspects as well, such as food culture, quality craftsmanship, architecture, and the productions of the agri-food chain, which can hardly be appreciated by hit-and-run visitors. The regional government’s commitment is to structure and strengthen the offer of archaeological parks and museums to the maximum, in order to offer a strong attraction that, thanks to the joint action of the territory’s operators, is transformed into a stable and lasting offer.”

Present at the inauguration of the new museum were the President of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, Gianfranco Miccichè, the Acting Director General of Cultural Heritage, Mariella Antinoro, the Director of the Archaeological Park of Morgantina and the Villa Romana del Casale, Liborio Calascibetta, the Mayor of Piazza Armerina, Antonino Cammarata, the Prefect of Enna Matilde Pirrera, the Questore Corrado Basile, Luisa Lantieri, regional deputy and the provincial commanders of the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza.

Free admission to the museum has been arranged from Aug. 16 to 31.

The 18th-century Palazzo Trigona is located in the central Piazza del Duomo and displays a selection of artifacts from human settlements in the territory included in the Morgantina Archaeological Park, from the prehistoric to the medieval period; it is also flanked by a system of computer exibits of high educational and scientific value that will make it possible to more effectively achieve the museum’s intended dissemination objectives, also using the tools of multimedia and interactive education.

Two large exhibition areas are planned in the Baroque building: on the upper floor is the archaeological section with the presentation of human settlements in the territory of Piazza Armerina starting from the prehistoric age and up to the medieval age. On the main floor will unfold the exhibition path concerning the history of Piazza Armerina, from its foundation to the present day. Two exhibition contents in particular: Piazza before Piazza, with the archaeological component, and Finally Piazza, with historical evidence of the city. There is also an immersive room for a virtual tour of the Villa and a reconstruction of the events of the musealization of the Villa del Casale, a Unesco heritage site, from its discovery to the present day.

The cost of the entrance ticket to Palazzo Trigona will be 6 euros, but there are cumulative tickets that include visits to the other sites in the archaeological park, in particular: the ticket to visit Palazzo Trigona and the Villa Romana del Casale will cost 13 euros, while the single cumulative ticket for the Park’s four sites, namely the two that are located in the territory of Piazza Armerina (Villa Romana del Casale and the Palazzo Trigona, and those that gravitate to the territory of Aidone (Regional Archaeological Museum of Aidone and the Archaeological Area of Morgantina) will cost 16 euros.
