The National Museum of Finland will return more than two thousand Sámi artifacts from its collections to the Sámi community and the Sámi Siida Museum in Inari in 2021. To celebrate this return, the museum venue will present from Oct. 29, 2021 to Feb. 27, 2022 an exhibition entitled Mäccmõš, maccâm, máhccan, which translated means Return Home.

About 150 objects from the Sámi collection, archival materials, photos and works by Sámi artists will be on display. A collection that was collected by the National Museum of Finland over a period of about 170 years, from 1830 to 1998. The objects acquired in the collection over different periods reflect the ideas and values of different eras and collectors.

The return of these objects to the Sámi community is also a significant sign of change internationally with a view to returning objects, which tell the story of Sámi culture and their traditions, to the original people. Artifacts that are important to the cultural heritage and identity of this population.

The exhibition will be held in collaboration with the Sámi community and the Sámi Siida Museum; it will be organized by Sámi activist Petra Laiti, and curated by artist Outi Pieski.
