Turin's GAM seeks new director. Announcement published

The Fondazione Torino Musei has published a notice for the search of a new director of GAM - Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea.

The Fondazione Torino Musei has initiated a non-binding selection procedure for the appointment of the Director of GAM - Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino by which it intends to solicit and collect expressions of interest from qualified individuals who meet the requirements.

The GAM of Turin, the first Civic Art Gallery to be founded in Italy, holds one of the most relevant parts of the national artistic heritage of the last two centuries and constitutes a workshop of experimentation for the most recent and advanced contemporary art experiences, including international ones. The museum today holds more than 50 thousand works including paintings, sculptures, works on paper, installations, videos and photography. It offers the public an itinerary from the late 18th century to the contemporary with masterpieces of Italian and international art. The contemporary collection ranges from Arte Povera to today’s most interesting research.

In addition to the exhibition itinerary dedicated to the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions, GAM houses an important video library and the Drawings and Prints Cabinet, where it is possible to consult a remarkable collection of nineteenth-century graphics, and a collection of artists’ books. There is also an Art Library and a Photographic Archive of Civic Collections.

The Turin Museums Foundation has recently defined and presented to the founding members and the Ministry of Culture a project for the overall regeneration and redevelopment of the building, which represents an opportunity to reposition the museum internationally and to generate positive spin-offs for the entire contemporary sector, through a design path that interprets and develops the historic avant-garde spirit that characterized the Gallery’s birth.

The new director should have specific and proven experience of a scholarly nature at the national and international level in the field of Italian and foreign art of the nineteenth, twentieth century and contemporary art, and of a managerial nature with particular regard to the management of museums or important similar public and/or private cultural institutions of national or international importance.

In addition to overseeing the preservation, ordering, exhibition, and study of the museum’s permanent collections, managing educational and higher education activities, and the development of the accessibility of inclusiveness, the new director is called upon to develop a strategy for the enhancement of the museum with the definition of an international and innovative structural and cultural concept, also in view of the peculiarities of the building and the desirable upcoming redevelopment of the museum structure. The new director will also have to increase fundraising activities, collaboration with other national and international institutions and the sharing of common strategic lines with the territory and the City of Turin, with the other Museums managed by the Foundation and with Artissima Srl, a company wholly owned by Fondazione Torino Musei that realizes the well-known International Contemporary Art Fair.

Applications must be received complete with the documents requested in the notice, no later than 12 noon Italian time on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 to the email box specifically dedicated to the procedure: avvisoGAM@pec.it, or by paper delivery by postal service or express courier with return receipt to the address Fondazione Torino Musei - Piazza Savoia n. 6 - 10122 Torino, in a sealed envelope, to be received by the same deadline.

Applications will be evaluated by an evaluation committee specially appointed by the Fondazione Torino Musei.
