From Nov. 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to Dec. 23, 2022 Palazzo Maffei Casa Museo presents Art in Action #2022: a month of free events to speak out against gender inequality and to give voice to the women of the Carlon Collection, as well as to invite reflection on the role of women in art. Meetings will range from online thematic encounters to special guided tours, from a self-theater performance to a conference dedicated to Peggy Guggenheim and her women artists.
The first edition of Art in Action is promoted by Palazzo Maffei Casa Museo in collaboration with the University of Verona and Fondazione Atlantide Teatro Stabile di Verona and boasts the support of the Veneto Region. It will start on November 25 with Ask me Pink to lead, for an entire month, to discover the faces, stories and arts of the women in the collection. A proposal that intends to involve both visitors and the virtual audience of Palazzo Maffei, thanks to a series of weekly posts and video contributions made by the students of the University of Verona and the Academy of Fine Arts of the city of Verona, who routinely collaborate with the House Museum, and published on social channels. The first online appointment will be with Carla Accardi and feminism, followed by the story of Lucretia immortalized in the 15th-century Verona painting and the story of the great painter Francoise Gilot, known more for her relationship with Picasso than for her art. In December we will continue with Marilyn Monroe starting with Andy Warhol’s painting, then the story of Donna Franca Florio portrayed by Boldini; then Chiomara, Cleopatra and, finally, the Madonna, a great protagonist of art, just a few days before the Christmas holidays.
Two special free guided tours for museum visitors will be offered on Nov. 26. At 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., art historian Sabrina Modenese will lead the public through the halls of the Palace to introduce the women artists who created or the women who inspired the works in the collection. From Friday, Dec. 2 to Monday, Dec. 5, the museum will become a theatrical scene with Etiquette, in collaboration with Teatro Stabile di Verona: a self-theater performance conceived by artist Silvia Mercuriali with Ant Hampton. A guided but always new performance that invites the audience to participate and question what is real and what is not. Etiquette will place two people, a man and a woman, in front of each other, guiding their dialogue through headphones to understand the necessity and difficulty of mutual understanding. Participation in the events will be free of charge, subject to purchase of a Museum admission ticket, limited places by reservation: biglietteria@palazzomaffeiverona.com
A meeting will also be dedicated to Peggy Guggenheim: on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. Grazina Subelyte, curator of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, will speak at the Palazzo Maffei Theater about Peggy and her support of personalities such as photographer Berenice Abbott, writer Djuna Barnes and artists such as Leonora Carrington, Irene Rice Pereira and Hedda Sterne. Free admission while seats last. Pictured is a portrait of Peggy Guggenheim.
