After restoration, the Mausoleum of St. Helen, a symbol of Torpignattara, has reopened to the public

After recovery, excavation and restoration work, the Mausoleum of St. Helena with its Antiquarium has reopened to the public.

Thanks to the cultural project promoted by the Special Superintendence for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Rome aimed at increasing interaction between the city and its history, the Mausoleum of St. Helen and its Antiquarium on the Via Casilina are open to the public.

An intervention of recovery, excavation and restoration that began in 1993 with funds from the Soprintenza, in agreement with the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology, was accomplished and reached its climax last May 6 through the signing of the agreement that entrusts the same PCAS with the management of the museum complex.

The inauguration of the Mausoleum and Antiquarium was held on Saturday, Oct. 12, on the occasion of the Second Day of the Catacombs, and they will be included in the tour route of the adjacent Catacombs of Saints Marcellinus and Peter.

The Mausoleum was built at the beginning of the fourth century AD at the behest of Constantine (Helena was the mother of Emperor Constantine); it is the symbol of the Roman neighborhood of Torpignattara.

Acting Special Superintendent Daniela Porro said, “With the reopening of the Mausoleum of St. Helena, the Superintendent’s Office returns to the community an important historical testimony of the area and, at the same time, enriches it with a new cultural gathering point. Together with the Pontifical Commission of Sacred Archaeology, significant restoration work has been carried out that has made it possible to restore the monument to its ancient splendor.”
