Bought at auction from the Arabs the Castle of Sammezzano

The entire Sammezzano Castle complex was purchased at auction by a company from the United Arab Emirates for 15.4 million euros.

Sammezzano Castle in Leccio di Reggello, a wonderful example of Orientalist architecture in Italy, has been bought at auction by an Arab Emirates company, Dubai Helitrope Limited, for the sum of 15.4 million euros.

The mayor of Reggello said he personally witnessed the auction “interpreting the apprehension of all Reggellians for the fate of the castle.” The entire Sammezzano complex was provisionally awarded to the Arab company, but “there will be appropriate ways and times in which the new owners will be able to discuss their ideas with the municipality.” The mayor also said, “I hope that the new owners will take Sammezzano to heart, safeguard it and immediately put in place the necessary interventions to combat degradation and secure the property. As soon as possible, we will make our request to the new owners to guarantee, compatibly with their project, the public use of the castle, as it represents a symbol for our community.”

Sammezzano Castle had recently won in the eighth edition of the"Places of the Heart" census.
