Christo, here's The London Mastaba: new work unveiled

Unveiled today The London Mastaba, Christo's new work: a truncated pyramid that will float on Serpentine Lake in London's Hyde Park until September 20, 2018.

The London Mastaba, the new work by Christo (Gabrovo, 1935) that will float on Serpentine Lake in London’s Hyde Park from June 20 to September 20, 2018, was unveiled today. The work is a large truncated pyramid composed of 7,506 colored barrels: it is twenty meters high and sits on a platform forty meters long and thirty meters wide.

Work on the work began in April and was recently completed. The work, as we had already told you on our pages, is inspired by a type of ancient Egyptian tomb called a mastaba. It is the new chapter in the Christo and Jeanne-Claude art project that the Bulgarian artist undertook with his wife Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon (Casablanca, 1935 - New York, 2009) and is now, after the death of his partner, carrying on alone. It is also Christo’s first work since his Floating Piers on Lake Iseo in 2016(more here), as well as his first public installation in the United Kingdom. The colors of the barrels of the large pyramid (red, blue, white and mauve) will light up with the reflections of the sun going to compose large abstract paintings on the waters of the lake.
