I Medici, previews, plot and actors of the third season of the highly followed Rai series

Advances on the plot and actors of the third season of 'The Medici,' the highly followed series broadcast by Rai.

On the image of Botticelli’sPrimavera ended last night the second season of the highly followed TV series I Medici, an Anglo-Italian co-production by Rai Fiction, Big Light Productions, Lux Vide, Wild Bunch and Altice Studio, which told, to an audience of more than four million viewers (always attested between 15 and 20 percent share), the vicissitudes of Lorenzo the Magnificent from his rise to de facto lord of Florence, up to the events of the Pazzi Conspiracy.

Fans of the series are already wondering if there will be a third season, and the answer is affirmative: filming has already begun this summer in Rome and some locations in Tuscany (including Volterra, Pienza, and Castelfiorentino), and the events of the new season (no release date is yet known) will again revolve around the figure of the Magnifico. The confirmation had already been given by the creator of the series, U.S. producer Frank Spotnitz, who last August 27, with a post on his Facebook page, sent his greetings from Rome (in fact, he could be seen photographed in Villa Giulia, already the set of some of the filming of the second season) announcing that that same August 27 was day one of the filming of the third season.

But that’s not all: at the presentation of the second season of I Medici that just aired, and which was held in October in Florence’s Palazzo Medici Riccardi, more details were revealed. In particular, the third season will focus on the relationship between Lorenzo the Magnificent and the city after the elimination of the opposition represented by the Pazzi: we will see Lorenzo lose his confidence in the city he helped build and we will see him clash with his people and their discontent, but we will nevertheless still see him battling new enemies and external threats to defend Florence. It is also likely that the third season will start from the war between the Magnifico and Pope Sixtus IV after the events of April 26, 1478.

Among the actors already confirmed are Daniel Sharman as Lorenzo, Synnøve Karslen as Clarice Orsini, and Alessandra Mastronardi as Lucrezia Donati. And in a group photo taken during filming in Pienza, other protagonists from the recently concluded season also appear: Sebastian de Souza(Sandro Botticelli), Jack Bannon (Poliziano) and Callum Blake (Carlo de’ Medici). “New” actors will include William Franklyn-Miller, Jack Roth and Francesco Montanari (the latter will play the role of Girolamo Savonarola). Other rumors report that the cast will also include Neri Marcorè, who will play Pope Innocent VIII, and Gomorrah star Marco Palvetti, who will be given a minor role. Perhaps there will also be room for Hugh Laurie, the great star of Doctor House. However, as was the case for the second season, it is not certain that for the third season we should not expect the return of some actors playing dead characters, who might appear in some flashback: therefore, the returns of Bradley James (who played perhaps the most beloved character of the second season, Giuliano de’ Medici) Sean Bean (highly appreciated interpreter of Jacopo de’ Pazzi) and Matteo Martari (who was given the role of Francesco de’ Pazzi in the second season) are not to be ruled out altogether.

The third season of I Medici will be directed by Canadian director Christian Duguay (to his credit such films as Belle and Sebastien and Coco Chanel). As mentioned, it is not yet known when it will air, but it is presumable to expect the new season to be released in the fall of 2020.
