The Ministry of Culture today released the names of the 10 finalist cities for the 2024 edition of the Italian Capital of Culture. The ten finalist cities vying for the title of Capital of Culture for 2024 are Ascoli Piceno, Chioggia (Venice), Mesagne (Brindisi), Pesaro, Sestri Levante and Tigullio (Genoa), Syracuse, Union of Municipalities of Paestum-Alto Cilento (Salerno, the union is composed of the municipalities of Agropoli, Capaccio, Cicerale, Laureana Cilento, Lustra, Perdifumo, Prignano Cilento, Rutino and Torchiara), Viareggio (Lucca) and Vicenza.

Thus discarded were the nominations of Ala (Trento), Aliano (Matera), Asolo (Treviso), Burgio (Agrigento), Capistrano (Vibo Valentia), Cittadella (Padua), Conversano (Bari), Diamante (Cosenza), Gioia dei Marsi (L’Aquila), La Maddalena (Sassari), Pordenone, Saluzzo (Cuneo), Vinci (Florence) and Unione Comuni Montani Amiata Grossetana (Grosseto, composed of Arcidosso, Castel del Piano, Castell’Azzara, Roccalbegna, Santa Fiora, Seggiano and Semproniano).

In previous editions, the Capital of Culture title was awarded to the cities of Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia, Ravenna and Siena (2015), Mantua (2016), Pistoia (2017), Palermo (2018), and Parma (2020 and 2021). Procida is the capital in 2022, while Bergamo and Brescia will be the capitals in 2023.
