The Ministry of Culture has renewed the top management of the Historical Museum of Liberation on Via Tasso in Rome, the institute dedicated to the Nazi-Fascist occupation of the capital from Sept. 10, 1943, to June 4, 1944, and the liberation of the city. The museum is housed in the building where the Nazis installed the SS Security Service Command, and which was also a prison where more than two thousand anti-fascists were imprisoned and tortured. In recent days, the three-year terms of office of the president and the five ministerial-appointed members of the steering committee were expiring: without these positions, the museum was in danger of being stranded, so much so that in the early days of 2024 the outgoing president, Antonio Parisella, in order to avoid causing a disservice to the citizens and in general to all those interested in visiting the museum, had decided to open the museum anyway, despite the expired appointment.
"A few weeks after the expiration of the old governance," said Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, who thanked Professor Parisella for his commitment over many years, “we proceeded to appoint a new president, in the authoritative figure of Professor Roberto Balzani, and the new Board of Directors composed of important scholars. I am now waiting for the City of Rome to notify its component.”
Sangiuliano also described as “surprising and instrumental” the controversy that has arisen in recent days following the expiration of the mandates, “taking into account,” the minister continued, “that in the past it took almost a year to make similar appointments without anyone breathing a word. Good work to the new President and the new board members, to whom the Ministry will give all the necessary support so that the Liberation Museum can continue to be an important part of the nation’s history.”
The new president of the Museum in Via Tasso is Professor Roberto Balzani, professor of History at the University of Bologna and former mayor of Forlì. On the Board of Directors are: Professor Giovanni Orsina, full professor of Contemporary History at Luiss “Guido Carli” University in Rome; lawyer Antonella Di Castro, vice-president and councillor for Culture of the Jewish Community of Rome; Professor Ester Capuzzo, full professor of Contemporary History at the “Sapienza University of Rome”; Professor Giovanni Oliva, historian former principal of the Liceo Classico “Massimo D’Azeglio” in Turin and councillor for Culture in the Piedmont Regional Council chaired by Mercedes Bresso.
