On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its founding, FAI - Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano, signed a new Framework Agreement with the Ministry of Culture. The agreement, signed on July 28, 2025 at the Collegio Romano in Rome, was signed by Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli and FAI President Marco Magnifico. The document renews and expands the contents of the previous agreement signed in 2020, consolidating a now multi-year collaboration between public institutions and private initiative on the protection, conservation and enhancement of Italy’s cultural heritage and landscape.
“Today’s agreement inveighs and strengthens the fruitful relationship between public and private, which is based on a shared vision of civil and educational support for the common good,” Marco Magnifico, FAI President. “An approach that has its roots in Article 118 of the Constitution, which encourages and promotes the principle of subsidiarity and responsibility that should inspire individual or associated citizens in carrying out activities of general interest. FAI was born 50 years ago with this spirit and is honored that the Ministry of Culture wanted to emphasize this common mission, while respecting its own competencies.”
The new Framework Agreement provides for the implementation of joint projects aimed at the study, restoration, promotion and use, including for tourism purposes, of cultural heritage, whether public or private. The aim is to strengthen a model of public-private cooperation that fosters shared management of the national heritage, extending activities also to access incentive and financing tools on a territorial, national and EU scale. Among the highlights of the agreement is the commitment to promote specific training paths, with the intention of improving the quality of maintenance and restoration interventions, but also to refine the way cultural heritage is managed and enhanced. Training is therefore considered a key tool for the long-term sustainability of conservation activities and for the professionalization of professionals in the field.
As part of the planned activities, a central role is given to the so-called FAI Days, both in their spring and fall editions. The events, which for years have represented a major event in the Italian cultural calendar, are identified as strategic tools to promote the rediscovery and enhancement of the national cultural and landscape heritage. In particular, FAI Days offer the opportunity to access places that are not usually visited by the public, often little known but of significant historical, architectural or landscape value. The selection of such places can also take place at the suggestion of the Ministry of Culture, confirming the collaborative nature of the initiative.
To ensure effective and ongoing management of the joint activities under the agreement, a joint technical table has been established. The body will have the task of coordinating the actions to be taken, monitoring the progress of the projects and identifying possible areas of intervention to be developed jointly. The technical table will be composed of representatives of the Ministry of Culture and FAI and will be a key operational tool for translating the goals of the agreement into concrete practices.
