During recent renovation work, a small frescoed chapel emerged in Naples, in the area connecting the convent and the church of Saints Severinus and Sossio, now home to theNaples State Archives. Announcing the discovery is the State Archives itself on its Facebook profile: “It is with immense emotion and a sense of deep respect for our historical heritage, of which we are custodians, that today we share with all of you and the scientific community a remarkable discovery.”
The fresco depicts the dead Christ in the arms of the Virgin Mary; on either side are the Benedictine saints Severinus and Sossius, with crosier and mitre.
“Now the exciting phase of dating and identifying the author will have to be tackled. This discovery reminds us once again that meticulous work and perseverance always reward,” the post continues. “And that our Archives, a treasure trove of splendid documentary vestiges and works of art, is unique to an ever-widening public, even from a museum perspective.”
