The Pio Monte della Misericordia is a philanthropic organization founded in 1602 by seven young Neapolitan nobles who decided to donate part of their possessions and commitment to charitable works. Caravaggio ’s masterpiece The Seven Works of Mercy epitomizes the acts of solidarity put into practice by the Pio Monte, welcoming visitors from the main altar of the church, along with paintings by Battistello, Giordano, Santafede and Forli. The 17th-century Palazzo del Pio Monte is located next to the Naples Cathedral and houses the Chapel, the Picture Gallery, the contemporary section and the Historical Archives. Pio Monte della Misericordia today is also a modern inclusive museum that continues to carry out social, solidarity, educational and inclusive projects and initiatives.

The Treasure of San Gennaro also houses a priceless heritage of devotional objects in gold, silver, bronze and precious stones. Over the centuries, these riches have been donated to San Gennaro by Neapolitan and foreign rulers, popes, and the people. The Treasure of San Gennaro has made major interventions to ensure the accessibility of the spaces and contents for visiting, working to remove physical, cognitive and sensory barriers and promoting the inclusion of all visitors with special needs and disabilities. Also on view until May 14 is an exhibition entitled Three Collars, the Jewels of Devotion curated by Laura Giusti, which offers a comparison of three symbols of devotion in Naples: the collar of St. Vincent Ferrer, the historic protector of the Sanità neighborhood, preserved in the Diocesan Museum of Naples and owned by the Cult Buildings Fund, with the two precious pectorals of St. Gennaro, the “solemn” collar and the Spera collar.
