Pesaro-Urbino, furnace of medieval or even older age discovered

An ancient furnace, probably medieval or even earlier, has been discovered in Lunano, in the province of Pesaro-Urbino.

Anancient kiln, probably medieval or even earlier, was discovered in Lunano (Pesaro-Urbino) during work to lay water mains. This was announced by the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio of Marche to Ansa. The excavation was directed by Diego Voltolino and conducted on site by Erika Valli and Laura Cerri.

"The work of laying the new water pipeline, thanks to the presence on site of professional archaeologists, allowed the excavation and documentation of this ancient furnace. It is the underground portion of a kiln, probably used for firing pottery, consisting of a rectangular space with side comb pillars that supported the floor, not preserved, of the firing chamber," explained the Superintendency.

Archaeologists pointed out that they also recognize the praefurnium, the opening that allowed loading and combustion necessary for the furnace to function; “at the moment it is not easy to propose an exact dating of the structure, which could be medieval or even older,” they commented. The remains of the kiln, which emerged at a shallow depth, have been protected and are being backfilled so that the regular road system can be restored.
