Pinuccio Sciola Digital Archive is born: ten years of artistic legacy online

Ten years after the death of sculptor Pinuccio Sciola, the Foundation of the same name presents a digital archive that collects documents, images, projects and works, making the artist's entire creative and intellectual journey accessible.

Ten years after the death of Pinuccio Sciola (San Sperate, 1942 - Cagliari, 2016), Italian sculptor of the second half of the 20th century, his work and thought become accessible online thanks to theDigital Archive dedicated to him. The project was created with the aim of preserving and making consultable a complex cultural heritage, offering the possibility of studying the artist’s creative and intellectual journey without limits of space and time. The Digital Archive is the result of a collaboration between the Pinuccio Sciola Foundation, established in 2016 by his children Chiara, Tomaso and Maria, and Hyperborea, a Panini Cultura Group company. Hyperborea’s team supported the Foundation in cataloging the materials and developing the digital platform based on the Arianna4 software, already used by numerous cultural institutions for heritage management and enhancement.

The structure of the archive allows consultation of a heterogeneous set of materials, from exhibition documentation to press reviews, from bibliography to complete cataloging of sculptural production. The platform allows the documents to be related to each other, reconstructing the network of connections that Sciola generated throughout his career. Through this tool, the complexity of his work emerges, characterized by his dialogue with stone, experimentation with wood, terracotta, iron and bronze, to his graphic and pictorial productions. Of particular note is the section Sciola’s Places, which brings together more than 400 completed and unfinished projects, nationally and internationally.

This part of the archive includes manuscripts, sketches and study materials that are essential for understanding the artist’s creative process and the different stages of development of her works. A corpus of about 2,000 documents and 50 graphic works has been catalogued according to the internationally recognized IIF-International Image Interoperability Framework standards used by the world’s leading archives, museums and libraries. The application of these standards offers advanced and interactive features designed to optimize consultation by scholars, institutions and enthusiasts.

The Pinuccio Sciola Foundation conceived the digital archive as a living infrastructure intended to foster research, historical-critical study and heritage enhancement. The project was realized thanks to funds from the PNRR, within the framework of the European call for proposals Next Generation EU - Digital Transition Cultural and Creative Bodies, with the contribution of the Region of Sardinia.
