Pistoletto's tree lights up Piazza della Repubblica in Florence

Lit Michelangelo Pistoletto's tree in Florence's Piazza della Repubblica on Dec. 8. It is inspired by the Third Paradise.

Michelangelo Pistoletto’s large tree was lit in Piazza della Repubblica in Florence, an initiative that is part of the Florence Light Festival Christmas event. This year’s edition honors the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, so it was named Moon F-Light.

For this occasion, three 18-meter-high trees were created for the Three Artist Trees project that are true site-specific works by three renowned artists-Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mimmo Paladino and Domenico Bianchi.

The trees were placed in Piazza della Repubblica, Piazza Santa Maria Novella and Piazza Santissima Annunziata, respectively.

The first to be lit on the occasion of Dec. 8 is precisely Pistoletto’s tree in Piazza della Repubblica: it is a large backlit tree that features images that refer to the Third Paradise, or variants installed around the world. Three consecutive circles representing infinity: the two outer circles symbolize diversity and opposites, while the central one symbolizes the union of opposites, the basis for creating a new humanity.

The other two trees by Paladino and Bianchi will be lit on December 14.
