Sammezzano Castle nominated for 7 Most Endangered Programme 2020

Sammezzano Castle has been nominated for the fifth edition of the 7 Most Endangered. The application for participation falls under the Save Sammezzano.

Sammezzano Castle has been nominated for the fifth edition of the 7 Most Endangered, the community program promoted by Europa Nostra, the pan-European federation for cultural heritage that aims to identify endangered places on European territory and mobilize public and private entities so that their recovery is ensured.

The application for participation in the program, made through Imago Mundi Onlus - Cultural Association of Cagliari, Italy, took place as part of Save Sammezzano, the international awareness campaign led by Francesco Esposito to achieve protection, enhancement and public enjoyment of Sammezzano.

Sammezzano’s bid, the outcome of which will be revealed in the spring of 2020, has received official support from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the Region of Tuscany, the Municipality of Reggello, the FPXA Committee and Kairos Srl.

Sammezzano Castle, already winner of theeighth Census I Luoghi del Cuore promoted by FAI and the only Italian cultural site to reach the final stage of the previous edition of 7 Most Endangered, is the most important example of eclectic architecture in Italy.

However, the castle remains closed and in a state of semi-abandonment for nearly three decades, aggravating its already dramatic structural situation.

Participation in the 7 Most Endangered Program 2020, in addition to urging Italian authorities to identify as soon as possible a permanent property that can restore it and make it usable, could attract the interest of potential investors willing to collaborate on a future rehabilitation project.
