Syracuse, basilica with Caravaggio's St. Lucy gets Interactive Signage

At the Basilica Santuario di Santa Lucia al Sepolcro in Syracuse, home to Caravaggio's world-famous St. Lucy, Interactive Tourist Signage has been installed, an always-on info-point that can be accessed from smartphones or tablets.

Accessibility and dissemination: at the Basilica Santuario di Santa Lucia al Sepolcro in Syracuse, famous for housing Caravaggio’s The Burial of St. Lucy , Interactive Tourist Signage has been installed to disseminate its cultural and artistic heritage to visitors in the most accessible and inclusive way possible. Designed by Skylab Studios, a Tarquin-based agency that just this year celebrates its first 25 years of experience in the field of innovation at the service of culture and tourism, the Signage is a real info-point that is always active.

In order to enjoy its content, all you have to do is frame the Qr Code on the Signage panel with any smartphone or tablet and immediately the tourist experience is enriched, thanks to technologies such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, services for disabilities and 360-degree ultra-high-definition photographs. Thus, services such as multilingual information (Italian and English), audioguides for people with visual impairments, and the valuable videoguides in LIS (Italian Sign Language) turn out to be the most suitable solutions to achieve the intended goal: to transform the tourist experience of visitors by making the Shrine not only a place of faith, but also a place of innovation and total accessibility, breaking down physical and sensory barriers.

From today, everyone will be able to study, learn about the architecture and discover the main works of the basilica, the 18th UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The adoption of the Signage was made possible thanks to a donation from the association “Sicilia Turismo per Tutti,” the generosity of the ISAB and the City of Syracuse, and the collaboration of the City of Syracuse, the Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired of Syracuse, the Apostolic Movement for the Blind, the Syracuse Deaf Association and the Pro Loco of Syracuse.

“We are very pleased,” says Leonardo Tosoni art director of Skylab Studios, “that our innovative solutions are being increasingly welcomed by the ecclesiastical art world as well. There are now many places of worship and cathedrals in Italy that have chosen innovation to popularize their heritage. Specifically, the Basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro has adopted the same innovative solutions put into operation at all the museums of the MEU Ecclesiastical Museums of Umbria as in the case of the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. An innovative system that connects people to faith and art without worrying about limitations imposed by disabilities. Thus continues our journey to make Italian heritage accessible to everyone and, above all, promoted internationally.”
