The Uffizi speaks in Latin. Three videos to pay homage to classical antiquity

On the occasion of European Archaeology Days, the Uffizi Galleries preent three works from their collections in Latin.

On the occasion of the 11th edition of the European Archaeology Days, June 19-21, the Uffizi Galleries will speak ... Latin.

Threemasterpieces from the collections will be presented in three videos on the official Facebook page of the Florentine museum venue: the bust of Emperor Trajan, Baccio Bandinelli’s Laocoon sculpture group and Botticelli’s Calumny. A tribute to classical antiquity during which the works mentioned will be illustrated in Latin.

Latine loquimur is the title of the Uffizi’s latest social initiative, in three short episodes: one per day, starting today. The Laocoon will be narrated by Alessandro Muscillo, the Calumny will be explained by Carolina Forasassi, and Novella Lapini will talk about the bust of Trajan. The videos will be presented by an introduction by director Eike Schmidt: also declaimed in Latin. Italian subtitles will be present.

“The choice of Latin to learn about and explore some of the Uffizi’s most significant works is an immersion in the civilization of our past, a way to re-establish historical context. The Uffizi’s collection of classical statues is among the most important in the world, the Renaissance paintings inspired by literature and philosophy in Latin are even unique: we also use these treasures to make the intangible heritage of the Latin language flourish again in remembrance of the glories and ideals of Roman civilization,” Schmidt commented.
