Two million more visitors to state museums than in 2016

According to MiBACT statistics, this first half of 2017 saw an increase in visitors to state museums: two million more than in 2016.

Two million more visitors to state museums than in 2016, according to theMiBACT Statistics Office’ s findings for the period covering this first half of 2017.

Minister of Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini commented, "In the first half of 2017, visitors to state museums grew by 7.3 percent compared to the same period in 2016. With more than 23 million admissions, nearly 2 million more than last year and 4 million more than in 2014 pre-reform, state cultural places are poised to record another record year. The museum revolution continues to bear fruit and demonstrates how right it was to give museums autonomy, endowing them with a directorate, a budget, a board of directors and a scientific council. All of this allowed for a decisive innovation in management with immediate results, starting with an increased digital presence."

The largest number of visitors would be in Lazio (10,131,268), followed by Campania (4,375,734) and Tuscany (3,443,800). The most dynamic regions for increase in visitors were Liguria (+33.5 percent), Veneto (+26.8 percent) and Friuli Venezia Giulia (+23.35). Evident, however, were the consequences of the earthquake in Central Italy in the drop in visitors to Umbria (-18.3 percent), Marche (-16.6 percent) and Abruzzo (-15.6 percent).
