Uffizi raises more than 649,000 euros for Marche region affected by earthquake

Through an initiative combined with an exhibition of Marche's heritage, the Uffizi raised more than 649,000 euros for the earthquake-stricken Marche region

The amount of money the Uffizi Gallery has raised for the cultural heritage in the Marche region affected by the 2016 earthquake has been announced. The fundraiser had originated on the occasion of the exhibition Facciamo presto! Marche 2016-2017: treasures saved, treasures to be saved(here is our review, full of images): during the entire period of the exhibition, from March 28 to July 30 of this year, for every ticket sold at the Uffizi would be donated one euro for reconstruction and aid to the areas of Marche where the works on display came from. The initiative raised more than 649,000 euros: an important result that rewards an exhibition that, said Marche Superintendent Carlo Birrozzi, “was an opportunity to see extraordinary works from many towns of the Marche hinterland affected by the earthquake brought together and to make known to a wide audience the enormous wealth and variety of heritage that this territory still holds. The rootedness of these works in their places of origin and in the communities that still hold them and to which they will return is quite special. This is an important and necessary awareness that strengthens the will to restart reconstruction precisely by drawing inspiration from their beauty and the desire to preserve the lunicity of these contexts.”

The superintendent also expressed his gratitude to the director of the Gallery, Eike Schmidt, who wanted to emphasize the relationship between Florence and the Marches: “Florentine art collections and Tuscany have accrued a great debt of gratitude to the Marches, because of the important collections that Vittoria della Rovere, the last of her line, brought as a dowry to Florence in 1631. Having the chance to reciprocate this enormous gift of beauty by helping to restore to the people of the Marche the prospect of a rapid recovery of what had been damaged by the earthquake, we did not let the opportunity pass us by. So we immediately took action to facilitate the collection of a sum that could go to fill the most immediate needs in the earthquake-affected areas.” Satisfaction was also expressed by the curator of the exhibition, Gabriele Barucca: “The initiative, which was intended to be a tribute to the Marche region by the most important and prestigious museum in Italy, was an opportunity to make known and appreciate to a wide audience some wonderful works, authentic gems of the rich heritage of art and history still and always preserved in the territories of the inland of southern Marche affected by the earthquake. The choice of the works to be exhibited also had the intention of synthetically retracing, through the presence of some of the highest and most significant artistic testimonies, an ideal path through the history of art in these territories from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.”

On behalf of the editorial staff of Finestre sull’Arte, warmest congratulations for a fine initiative that excellently blended solidarity and knowledge.
