At the Uffizi Galleries this morning a tourist, in order to take a selfie, tripped and damaged, falling over, a painting by Anton Domenico Gabbiani. It was the Portrait of Ferdinando de’ Medici Grand Prince of Tuscany, a late 17th-century work by the artist, which is usually kept in the Pitti Palace but is now on display at the Uffizi as part of the exhibition Florence and Europe. The tourist caused a gash at the height of the right foot of the portrayed subject, but according to the Corriere Fiorentino, which accompanies the article with a photo of the damage, the Florentine museum’s management has let it be known that it is only minor damage, that the painting has been removed to allow restorers to work on it, and that after repair it will be back on display in the exhibition within a few days.
Staff immediately responded to the incident; the tourist was identified and charged.
