European Photography 2022, here are the names of the three photographers selected from the open call

Here are the names of the three photographers selected from the open call who will exhibit at Fotografia Europea 2022. The edition will be dedicated to the theme "An Invincible Summer."

Simona Ghizzoni, Gloria Oyarzabal and Maxime Richè are the three photographers selected from the open call who will exhibit at Fotografia Europea 2022, which will be held in Reggio Emilia from April 29 to June 12, 2022. The open call invited photographers to send projects inspired by this edition’s theme, which is"An Invincible Summer," and among more than two hundred participants from all over Europe, the three mentioned above were chosen, each with their own personality and expressive language.

Simona Ghizzoni from Reggio Emilia (already winner of two editions of the World Press Photo for her work on the condition of women) was prompted in the aftermath of the pandemic to leave Rome to take refuge in the Apennines of Emilia, thus rediscovering her ties with her family’s past. Here she had the opportunity to recover a relationship with nature and people: thus the Isola project was born. Photographic prints combined with multimedia elements (curated by Nicolas Janowski) intended to reflect on the period just past.

Spanish photographer and filmmaker Gloria Oyarzabal focuses her investigation on the concept of the museum, particularly from a colonialist perspective. If the origin of these spaces is colonialist, history, collective memory, rights and ethics come into conflict. Usus fructus abusus, concepts from Roman law, offer the title for the 2021 research with which she participated in the Open Call. Oyarzabal’s work has a strong visual impact flanked by installation proposals that allow the interpretation of a controversial topical issue, offering precise perspectives.

Parisian Maxime Richè has long been measuring human adaptability in the face of the consequences of environmental upheavals. The focus of this story is the fire that incinerated the town of Paradise, California, in just four hours on Nov. 8, 2018, replicated over the following summers until a million acres around what had been a town were desertified. In spite of it all, many are returning and trying to rebuild their lives where life was so brutally obliterated, taking on the enterprise of a new vision for the environment. Richè recounts the strength and will to start over after the disaster.

Confirmed is Iren ’s support for the European Photography International Open Call, which, already a special sponsor of the festival, is backing this project to support new talents and new looks at contemporary reality.
