The first book series to listen to the sound of musicians depicted in Italian monuments is born

Sonus, the first book series to listen to the sound of musical instruments depicted in Italy's most famous monuments and museums, is born.

Sonus, the first series on musical iconography found in Italian museums, is born. This is an innovative project, conceived and curated by Barbara Aniello of the Pontifical Gregorian University, which aims to reveal the beauty of sculptures, paintings, embroideries, frescoes, and mosaics with a musical subject in the most beautiful Italian cities.

It is an itinerant and interactive journey between the visual and the aural, conceived as a book published by Centro Di, inside which is a QR code that allows you to listen to the sound of the instruments depicted in the monuments and works of art. The musical pieces were recorded especially for Sonus, under the guidance of maestro Mauro Morini, by the historical instrument ensemble La Pifarescha.

The first volume in the series is Sonus 1 Florence: starting at the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, it winds its way through the bell tower and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, culminating in the Baptistery of San Giovanni. Thanks to multimedia tools that give the possibility to listen to the instruments depicted in the different monuments, visitors will be able to not only contemplate but also listen to the sound of lutes, vielles, trumpets and cymbals depicted in the most famous Florentine monuments.

After Florence, volumes dedicated to Rome, Vatican City, Naples, Milan, Bergamo, Palermo, Padua, Viterbo, Ravenna, Tarquinia and Perugia will follow.

Sonus 1 - Florence, in collaboration with Pontifical Gregorian University, Pontifical Council for Culture and Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music, has an international scientific committee under the auspices of the director of the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, Timothy Verdon, Professor Barbara Aniello and Professor Gabriele Giacomelli.
