A new site-specific work at Runway 500: an XXL collage of social claim struggles

Starting May 4, 2023, the Pista 500 at Pinacoteca Agnelli will welcome a new site-specific work by French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster.

The Pista 500, Pinacoteca Agnelli ’s art project on the iconic FIAT car test track on the roof of the Lingotto, curated by Sarah Cosulich and Lucrezia Calabrò Visconti, welcomes from Thursday, May 4, 2023 a new large site-specific work commissioned by Pinacoteca Agnelli. It is PISTARAMA by French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (Strasbourg, 1965).

The new work joins the Runway 500 programming that includes installations by Nina Beier, VALIE EXPORT, Sylvie Fleury, Liam Gillick, Marco Giordano, Nan Goldin, Shilpa Gupta, Louise Lawler, Mark Leckey, Cally Spooner, and SUPERFLEX. In dialogue with the new runway garden and the building’s architecture, the installations engage with different languages of sculpture: from environmental interventions to light or sound works to expanded cinema projects.

For Pinacoteca Agnelli, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster presents PISTARAMA, a work conceived specifically for the north parabolic curve of the Pista 500 that represents the first panorama Gonzalez-Foerster has created outdoors and the first of monumental size, with a total length of more than 150 meters. The work consists of an XXL collage that takes its cue from the political and cultural history of Turin and extends to episodes and figures related to struggles of social claims that span a multiplicity of different times and geographies. Through the presence of historical and fictional figures, artworks, documents, photographs, film references and the artist’s visions, the project reflects on the way collective bodies claim the space of cities, starting from two modes: the practice of writing in public space and the shared movement of bodies marching in demonstration.

The work recounts and celebrates the way in which the union of people and their collective action can become agents of social change and at the same time aspires to be a tool for confronting history, including the history of the former Lingotto factory that houses the Pinacoteca.

PISTARAMA is the fourth installment of the artist’s Panorama series made previously at the Secession in Vienna (2021), Serpentine Galleries in London (2022), and Esther Schipper Gallery in Berlin (2022).
