Starting Friday, a mural against violence against women can be seen at the Bergamo Fairgrounds: it is The Labyrinth of the Rose, a work by young Lecco-based artist and writer Elisa Veronelli to raise awareness of the issue. Promoted by JTI Italia and Save The Planet in collaboration with local government and PromoBerg, the work was painted with a special anti-pollution paint that, thanks to an all-Italian technology, makes it able to “breathe” as if it were a plant, retaining fine dust and pollution to return clean air. Moreover, thanks to the presence of a QRCode, framing the work with your cell phone lands you on a web page from which you can contact Aiuto Donna, the anti-violence association active in the Bergamo area to support victims of physical and mental abuse.

The particular material with which it was made, Fotosan, a totally natural paint produced in Italy, through the principle of photocatalysis cleans the air of many harmful and noxious substances, allows the work to perform an effective anti-pollution action. The initiative is part of the larger Sustainable Cities project, launched by Save The Planet and JTI Italy to monitor the sustainability of Italian cities and promote concrete interventions in collaboration with local governments.

“The scourge of violence against women is a social wound that the pandemic has further worsened,” explains Oliana Maccarini, president of Aiuto Donna, “according to Istat data, at least one in 3 women in their lives has been a victim of abuse, and in the last two years we have seen the phenomenon grow exponentially and above all we have seen how difficult it is for many women to ask for help to get out of violence. That is why we say that this work ’speaks’: the labyrinth inside which the rose is enclosed represents us, but above all, thanks to the QR Code, the work communicates with all women, shows that a way out is possible and is just a click away, anonymously and immediately.”

“For us at JTI,” says Lorenzo Fronteddu, Corporate Affairs & Communication Director of JTI Italy, “being sustainable means working every day to make our world a better place in all areas. We are convinced that it is a concept to be declined at 360 degrees, integrating environmental sustainability with economic and social sustainability in a single vision. As in this work, where we are going to combine the environmental theme of reducing pollution with an important awareness-raising action against violence against women, a social drama that is unfortunately still very current. We chose Bergamo, the city that symbolizes the restart of our country and capital of culture in 2023, because we believe that now is the time to start again together to build a more sustainable future, on all fronts.”

“We are really happy to have completed this work,” said Elena Stoppioni, President of Save the Planet. “It is an initiative that we strongly wanted together with JTI because, in addition to being relevant in terms of sustainability, an issue for which we were born and fight every day, it is also relevant in terms of the social issue. Having the opportunity to launch a double message on two topics of this value, such as violence against women and saving the planet, is a source of pride for our association. I believe and hope that this initiative will serve as a warning and raise awareness in improving, day by day, the society in which we live.”

Fabio Sannino, president of Promoberg Srl, comments, "Promoberg immediately and with great participation adhered to Save The Planet and JTI’s proposal to give space and voice to Elisa Veronelli’s mural. The labyrinth of the Rose, placed at the entrance of the Bergamo Fair, will welcome with great sensitivity and artistic beauty all those who will participate in our events, drawing their attention to two issues-environmental sustainability and the fight against violence against women-that are dutifully among the priorities of the agendas of institutions and the commitment of citizens. The work has the great merit of representing hi-tech made in Italy at its best and being an innovative tool that can help women victims of violence. Promoberg has always been committed against gender violence, with initiatives to raise awareness, such as the installation of a red bench - a recognized symbol of denunciation and the fight against feminicide - inaugurated during the last edition of Creattiva, an event that will finally return to the Fair next March 3. A way, to which the mural is added today, to draw attention to the need to increase efforts to prevent and combat gender-based violence, a social scourge that can no longer be tolerated. I thank the artist and all those who made this initiative possible."
