In Nature nothing exists alone: the monumental work of Claudia Comte in Maremma

From July 16 to Sept. 30, 2022, the Maremma countryside will see the work "In Nature nothing exists alone," a monumental environmental intervention by Claudia Comte.

From July 16 to Sept. 30, 2022, Hypermaremma presents, in collaboration with the magazine CURA. directed by Ilaria Marotta and Andrea Baccin, the intervention IN NATURE NOTHING EXISTS ALONE, an environmental work by Claudia Comte (Grancy, 1983) that, developing over one hundred meters in length, represents to date her most extensive site-specific installation in this series of works. Entirely composed of pine logs from Mount Amiata, following the selective thinning cycle that allows forests a controlled regeneration, Comte employs a natural material to punctuate a message designed toemphasize the origins of the land, and borrows a phrase taken from the well-known U.S. biologist and scientist Rachel Carson. In her 1962 book Silent Spring, Carson anticipated key environmental issues such as the impact of human action on nature, and in particular the effects of indiscriminate use of DDT, pesticides and plant protection products. With this intervention, Claudia Comte’s work therefore aims to encourage the viewer to activate a reflection on man’s relationship with nature and the life cycle of the planet, according to which everything is connected in a perfect balance.

This work is among the most impressive environmental installations that the artist creates to examine issues dear to her heart such as climate change, ecology and global pollution, starting precisely from observing the rules of nature and its mutability.

Born and raised in 1983 in Grancy, a small village in the Swiss countryside near Lausanne, Claudia Comte often inserts a strong autobiographical component in many of her works: surrounded and inspired by ancient trees, non-anthropocentric data and biomorphic forms, the forest, in particular, belongs to her childhood memories, constituting one of the very first elements capable of influencing the translation of the landscape in her creations. His practice is guided by this longstanding interest in researching the history and memory of biomorphic forms through traditional manual processes and industrial and mechanical technologies. Playfully inspired by organic patterns and morphology, her site-specific installations testify to the intelligence and transformative capacities of the ecological world.

Claudia Comte advances among different media, often combining sculptures or installations-the main body of her works-with wall paintings, videos, and performances, creating environments in which works relate to each other with visual rhythms that are both methodical and playful. Elements such as the forest, video games, comic books and science fiction films have contributed and continue to contribute to the creation of a language rich in real and imaginary references. His work is defined by an interest in the memory of materials and careful observation of the relationship between humans and technology.
