Restoration Open to the Public at MAXXI: Remo Salvadori’s “Stanza dei Verticali” in the Spotlight

From June 30 to July 17, 2026, MAXXI will open the restoration site for Remo Salvadori’s *La Stanza dei Verticali* to the public. This is an opportunity to observe up close the work of restorers and students from the Central Institute for Restoration.

The IN RESTAURO project continues at MAXXI in Rome, an initiative that brings to light the work normally carried out in conservation laboratories, transforming it into an experience open to the public. Through temporary worksites set up within the museum spaces, visitors can closely follow the various stages of conservation work and observe the interplay between scientific research, technical expertise, and the preservation of artistic heritage. For the fourth installment of the program, scheduled from June 30 to July 17, 2026, the workshop will be hosted in Corner D of the museum and will feature *La Stanza dei Verticali* (1995–2000), one of the most representative works by the recently deceased artist Remo Salvadori, one of the central figures of Italian contemporary art.

The project will be organizedby the Central Institute for Restoration (ICR) as part of the PFP4 training program offered by the ICR’s School of Advanced Training and Study. Students, supported by the institute’s faculty, will work in front of the public, offering an opportunity to gain a close-up understanding of the methodologies and skills required for the conservation of contemporary artworks.

The goal of the restoration is to restore the installation’s full legibility and ensure greater long-term stability. The work will focus in particular on the work’s metal surfaces, which will undergo a thorough cleaning and treatment process, respecting the characteristics of the materials and the installation’s conservation history. Added to the MAXXI collection in 2012, *La Stanza dei Verticali* is a large sculptural installation composed of eleven elements that encapsulate some of the most significant themes in Salvadori’s artistic practice. The work juxtaposes copper and steel—recurring materials in his artistic language—through five square copper plates, three cylindrical copper sheets, and three steel rings.

Together, these elements create a space based on relationships, tensions, and balances that evokes the Pythagorean theorem and invites a broader reflection on the concept of harmony. In the artist’s vision, the dialogue between the two metals symbolically represents the encounter between complementary opposites: masculine and feminine, energy and receptivity, rationality and the spiritual dimension.

The conservation challenges currently present stem from processes of deterioration that have developed over the years and were already evident when the museum acquired the work. The planned intervention will therefore address these issues through specialized conservation work aimed at preserving the integrity of the installation and restoring its full expressive power.
