From April 6 to October 31, 2026, one of Siena Cathedral’s most fascinating events returns: the visit with the claviger, an exclusive experience that allows access to the Cathedral at first light. Every morning at 7:15 a.m., participants will be able to join the claviger, the keeper of the keys, in the daily ritual of opening the Cathedral, witnessing the switching on of the lights and the preparation of the rooms before the arrival of the public.
New for the 2026 edition is the presence, alongside the claviger, of a specialized guide who will accompany visitors to discover the masterpieces and curiosities housed in the Cathedral, offering a historical-artistic insight that further enriches the experience. The route thus combines the excitement of the “awakening” of the Cathedral with a more conscious knowledge of its heritage. In the silence of the morning, it will be possible to admire the imposing interior of the church, visit the Piccolomini Library and walk through the evocative attics thanks to the opening of the Gate of Heaven.
During the summer period, from late June to mid-October, on the occasion of the extraordinary uncovering, the experience will be further enhanced by the possibility of admiring the famous Floor of the Cathedral: the magnificent “marble carpet,” the result of more than five centuries of artistic and symbolic elaboration.
The claviger: the awakening of Siena Cathedral is among the special cultural proposals promoted by theOpera della Metropolitana di Siena and organized by Opera Laboratori. The initiative is designed for small groups (maximum 18 people) to ensure an intimate and engaging encounter with one of the greatest masterpieces of Italian heritage.
Given the great success, in 2026 the appointments will increase: 63 visit days are planned, articulated every morning in two shifts at the same time. A rare opportunity to experience the Duomo away from the crowds.
