Fifth Biennial Contemporary Mosaic Review opens in Ravenna

Ravenna: the fifth Biennial Contemporary Mosaic Review kicks off, with many events and exhibitions in the city from Oct. 7 to Nov. 26.

From Oct. 7 to Nov. 26, the fifth edition of the Biennial Review of Contemporary Mosaics will be held in Ravenna.

There will be two main exhibitions around which the exhibition will revolve: "Montezuma, Fontana, Mirko. Mosaic Sculpture from Origins to Today," based at the city’s Mar Museum of Art, curated by Alfonso Panzetta with the collaboration of Daniele Torcellini, with 140 absolute masterpieces on display(we have given you some previews here, with a selection of works you can see), and SICIS Destination Micromosaic, an event celebrating 30 years of activity of one of the greatest realities of artistic mosaic and an excellence in international design, which will be held at Palazzo Rasponi dalle Teste.

The exhibition, however, will also consist of other events: the Franciscan Cloisters will host Opere dal Mondo, a selection of works by international artists in collaboration with AIMC (Associazione Internazionale Mosaicisti Contemporanei), while the Manica Lungadella Biblioteca Classense will host the fourth edition of GAEM Giovani Artisti e Mosaico and, in collaboration with the Museo Internazionale della Ceramica di Faenza, there will be a solo exhibition dedicated to artist Silvia Celeste Calcagno, curated by Davide Caroli, and an evocative project of theRavenna Academy of Fine Arts entitled Fabulae, a fascinating interweaving of stories within which visitors can follow the threads of the new creative experiences of the youngest mosaic artists.

A site-specific installation by artist Marco De Luca, curated by Linda Kniffitz in collaboration with Emanuela Fiori, will be hosted at the Baptistery of theAryans, built at the time of the Ostrogothic king Theodoric, beginning in the late 5th century and finished shortly thereafter in the first half of the 6th century.

To pay homage to Dante Alighieri, the supreme poet who spent the last part of his life in the Romagnola city, the exhibition "Inferno in Bottega. Dante’s Comedy in the light of mosaic," in which it will be possible to visit the ateliers of Ravenna mosaicists who will create a common work whose fil-rouge will be the theme of the circles of Dante’s Inferno.

Finally, social values and artistic values will shape the project of the DisOrdine association, which envisages the revaluation of the urban area in front of Ravenna’s Ex-Prisons. The intervention is inspired by the Labyrinth of the Basilica of San Vitale and will directly involve inmates, in collaboration with the Ravenna Academy of Fine Arts.
