"I Suoni delle Dolomiti" is back—the high-altitude festival set in the most picturesque locations of Trentino

Starting August 24, 2026, “I Suoni delle Dolomiti” returns—the festival that, for over thirty years, has brought internationally renowned artists to the peaks, meadows, and mountain huts of the Trentino Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. An experience that combines music, hiking, and scenery, with a particular focus on sustainability, accessibility, and environmental protection.

The 31st edition of I Suoni delle Dolomiti, under the artistic direction of Mario Brunello, kicks off on Monday, August 24, and features a rich lineup of events in the most picturesque locations in Trentino. The festival, founded in 1995 based on an idea by Paolo Manfrini, thus revives an original concept that over the years has made it a unique event on the international music scene: no large stages or auditoriums, but concerts set amidst nature and accessible only on foot. The goal is not only to offer the public high-quality musical experiences but also to create a direct connection between music, landscape, and the environment. The festival is a member of the European Festivals Association and, as of 2025, has adopted a management system compliant with the ISO 20121:2024 standard for sustainable events. Special attention is also given to accessibility, with four events designed to facilitate participation by people with disabilities.

The first event is scheduled for Monday, August 24, at 12 p.m. in Val Nana, at Malga Tassulla, in the heart of the Brenta Dolomites. The highlight will be “Archi, Corde, In-canto,” a special project born from the collaboration between I Violoncellisti della Scala and the SOSAT Choir, which will celebrate the centennial of its founding in 2026. The event weaves together the tradition of Alpine singing with the expressive possibilities of the cello, creating a dialogue between memory, innovation, and musical exploration. Arrangements by Stefano Nanni will accompany the collaboration between the choir’s voices and the strings of the La Scala ensemble. The concert will take place in the picturesque setting of Pian della Nana, within the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters. A glacial and karstic basin where music will be an integral part of the landscape.

The SOSAT Choir, founded in 1926 within the Workers’ Section of the SAT, has contributed to the dissemination of Alpine folk singing for a century, performing in Italy and abroad and collaborating with artists from various musical genres. Joining them will be I Violoncellisti della Scala, an ensemble founded in 2003 and composed of musicians from the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra, who will present a repertoire spanning different eras and musical styles.

Malga Tassulla can be reached from Cles by car to the Malga Culmei parking lot and then on foot, following the route indicated by the festival. The hike takes about one hour and 15 minutes, with an elevation gain of 300 meters and a difficulty level of E (hiking). To limit traffic and environmental impact, it is recommended that you drive to the parking lot with your car fully loaded. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to 5:30 p.m. at the Auditorium Polo Scolastico in Cles, with free admission while seats last.

The second event is scheduled for Friday, August 28, at 12:00 p.m.on the Paganella Plateau, at the Tosa Pedrotti Mountain Hut. The featured artist will be violinist Ilya Gringolts, an internationally renowned performer known for his virtuosity and the exceptional depth of his interpretations. Gringolts won the Paganini Prize in 1998, becoming the youngest winner in the history of this prestigious award. Throughout his career, he has developed an extremely broad repertoire, ranging from Baroque to contemporary music, combining his concert activities with research into historically informed performance practice. Among the orchestras with which he has collaborated are the Oslo Philharmonic, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra. For the “Suoni delle Dolomiti” event, he will play a 1718 Stradivarius “Ex-Prové.”

The Tosa Pedrotti Mountain Hut, a historic landmark for mountaineers and hikers, is nestled among the peaks and cliffs of the Brenta Dolomites and offers one of the most spectacular settings of the festival. The route from Molveno involves taking the cable car to Pradel, at 1,367 meters, and then continuing on foot along trails 340 and 319, passing by the Croz dell’Altissimo Mountain Hut, the Selvata Mountain Hut, and the Baito dei Massodi. The hike takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes, with a total elevation gain of 1,124 meters and a difficulty rating of E. The route does not present any particular technical difficulties but requires good physical conditioning. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be rescheduled for August 29 at 12:00 p.m. at the same location. If the rescheduled date is also not feasible, the event will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Molveno Conference Hall.

In 2026, “I Suoni delle Dolomiti” reaffirms its identity as a festival deeply rooted in the local area. The concerts take place in natural settings of exceptional beauty and are accessible on foot via trails of varying difficulty, transforming the journey itself into an integral part of the experience.

All events are free, with the exception of the “Trekking dei Suoni,” and invite the public to experience the mountains through a respectful and mindful approach. The format conceived by Paolo Manfrini in 1995 continues to set the festival apart: artists perform without the traditional infrastructure of large-scale concerts, while the audience reaches the performance sites on foot. The silence of the mountains becomes part of the music, the walk becomes a shared experience, and the landscape transforms into an extraordinary space for listening.
