Lecture series for Effetto Leonardo at Palazzo Pretorio in Prato

Starting Friday, May 17, 2019, a series of lectures on the themes of the Effetto Leonardo exhibition at Palazzo Pretorio in Prato kicks off.

From Friday, May 17, 2019, at 6 p.m., a series of lectures will kick off to explore the interconnections between the present and the past and the themes featured in the exhibition Effetto Leonardo. Works from the Carlo Palli Collection, set up at the Palazzo Pretorio in Prato.

Experts in ancient and contemporary art history, such as Stefano Pezzato, Laura Monaldi, Claudio Cerretelli and Rita Iacopino, will hold the three meetings.
Stefano Pezzato, curator of the temporary and head of collections and archives at Centro Pecci, will give a lecture entitled Leonardo and Contemporary Artists: starting from the exhibition, the curator will illustrate various references to Leonardo’s art and research by contemporary artists. From the Dada revolution of Duchamp, passing through the Surrealism of Dali and Magritte, arriving at the Nouveau Realisme of Spoerri and Christo, to the Pop Art of Andy Warhol, including great Italian authors such as Ceroli and Pistoletto: it will be a roundup of suggestions and evocations from the historical Avant-gardes of the early 20th century to the Street Art of the new millennium, always and in any case in the wake of Leonardo.
The next meeting will be held on Friday, May 24, with Laura Monaldi, art critic and essayist, with La collezione Palli e le neoavanguardie; on Friday, May 31, Palazzo Pretorio conservator Rita Iacopino and Prato Diocesan Museums director Claudio Cerretelli will discuss the theme Art and Architecture in Prato at the Time of Leonardo.

The exhibition Leonardo Effect. Works from the Carlo Palli Collection reworks, in a contemporary key, the themes dear to the Da Vinci genius through eighty works by fifty national and international artists executed from the late 1960s to the 2000s. From the famous senile portrait of Leonardo graphically reworked by Man Ray, the exhibition is presented as a “discourse on the art” of Leonardo, his myth, his research and activities, his masterpieces and his codes, revisited and reinterpreted, taken up or evoked. Foreword to the exhibition becomes Ben Vautier ’s canvas with the manifesto assumption of conceptual art: “Art is a discourse about art.” The exhibition itinerary winds its way through four rooms and concludes with the “collector’s choices” around Leonardo’s imagery, the exhibition’s central thread.

The lectures will be held in the conference room on the second floor of Palazzo Pretorio. Free admission subject to availability.
