Miart 2022 edition unveiled. Here's what it will look like and what's new

Miart, Milan's international modern and contemporary art fair now in its 26th edition, returns from April 1 to 3, 2022. Here's what it will look like and what's new.

The 26th edition of Milan’s international modern and contemporary art fair, organized by Fiera Milano and directed for the second time by Nicola Ricciardi, was presented today: Miart will in fact return from April 1 to 3, 2022. Participating will be 151 galleries from twenty countries, including leading Italian galleries, and will also see the return of a solid group of loyal galleries, but new entries are also expected. The projects, selected by the committee, are intended to create a coherent and accurate fair, to promote dialogue between iconic works and new talent, and to enhance tradition with an eye always on the future. The artists on display also include some of the protagonists of the 59th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, such as Carla Accardi, Tomaso Binga, Miriam Cahn, Giulia Cenci, Gabriel Chaile, Louise Nevelson, Joanna Piotrowska, and Grazia Varisco.

There will be three sections of the fair: Established, the main section that will host in an unprecedented way galleries exhibiting works of the strictest contemporaneity together with those dedicated to 20th-century art, without neglecting those active in the field of collectible and signature design; Decades, curated by Alberto Salvadori, which explores the history of the last century through monographic projects from the 1910s to the 2000s; Emergent, the section curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini dedicated to young galleries and which will be placed at the entrance to the exhibition itinerary to highlight the research of the most recent generations of gallery owners and artists.

The main objective of this edition is to initiate a new phase: the first movement of a possible new symphony. This term, borrowed from classical music but a source of countless suggestions, represents not only the desire of an industry ready to lengthen its stride and take a leap forward, but is also a reference to the history of art and the succession over time of movements that intertwine and influence one another. The idea of movement also plays a central role in the development of miart’s new graphic identity and photo campaign, entrusted for the first time to Cabinet Milano. For the 2022 edition Cabinet collaborated with German photographer and choreographer Isabelle Wenzel, who photographed herself in a series of aerobic actions and positions focusing on the sculptural qualities of the body.

The same concept is also at the center of a series of initiatives and collaborations activated by Miart with partners and institutions belonging to the world of music, dance and theater. These include the unprecedented project OutPut, curated by Davide Giannella: a cycle dedicated to performance in public space with protagonists Riccardo Benassi and Michele Rizzo realized thanks to the support of the Marcelo Burlon Foundation. Or FOG Triennale Milano Performig Art: the performing arts festival of Triennale Milano that presents the lecture-performance Dying On stage by Cypriot Christodoulos Panayiotou and the long-awaited premiere of Milano, the new work by Romeo Castellucci filmed by Yuri Ancarani.

In addition to these initiatives are the many planned in the context of the new edition of Milano Art Week (March 28 to April 3), developed in collaboration with the Culture Department of the City of Milan. Opening at Miart are the exhibitions Useless Bodies? by Elmgreen & Dragset at Fondazione Prada, When Fear Eats The Soul by Artur Zmijewski at PAC - Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Yuli Yamagata at Ordet and Sunshine State by Steve McQueen at Pirelli HangarBicocca. The Scanavino Archive will open its new exhibition space in Piazza Aspromonte; the ArtLine will come alive with works by Mario Airò, Alfredo Jaar and Kiki Smith; and it will also be possible to visit exhibitions already open in the city.

The link between Milan and the fair is also strengthened by aphotographic installation created especially for Miart by Giovanna Silva, which leads the city inside the fairgrounds. Conceived as a natural continuation of City, I listen to your heart, an exhibition intervention realized by Silva at the Milan Triennale in 2021, the new project offers a selection of about five hundred photographs taken in the city and projected through a series of screens inside Miart.

Another important novelty is Miart’s membership in the Italian chapter of the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC), an international nonprofit organization founded in the United Kingdom to facilitate the decarbonization of the art sector and the promotion of zero-waste practices. Miart will dedicate a special booth to promoting collective and systemic change.

The collaboration also continues with Intesa Sanpaolo, which supports Miart as main partner.

Also confirmed are the Herno Prize, which awards a 10,000-euro prize to the booth with the best exhibition project, and the LCA Prize for Emergent worth 4,000 euros for the gallery with the best presentation within the Emergent section. These awards will be joined by a new partner thanks to the unprecedented Covivio Acquisition Prize, dedicated to the Emergent section and which will select an artist to commission a site-specific work with an investment of up to 20,000 euros. The work produced or selected will be installed in a property in the Symbiosis business district.
