The fourth edition of MuseoCity kicks off in Milan: the 2020 Museum Weekend runs from July 31 to August 2.

The fourth edition of Milano MuseoCity will be held from July 31 to August 2. The widespread event of Milan ’s museums (which over the years has come to involve in the city and the metropolitan area more than 85 art museums, history museums, science museums, house museums, artists’ houses, archives and business museums, protagonists of meetings, exhibitions and events to enhance the cultural function of their extraordinary heritage) usually sees the turnout in three days of about 80,000 people.

Precisely to ensure the widest public participation while respecting everyone’s safety, public and private institutions participating in this edition of Milano MuseoCity are also proposing numerous digital initiatives and a program declined on the new needs of quota entrances and spacing within the halls.

From Friday, July 31, the museums involved will open their doors to the public (where possible in presence, alternatively in virtual and digital mode) offering hundreds of appointments including guided tours, special openings and special initiatives, all characterized by a single leitmotif: Women protagonists, a theme that fits perfectly with that of the Cultural Palimpsest 2020 of theMilan City Council’s Culture Department, The Talents of Women. In fact, this year’s edition of Milano MuseoCity aims to highlight not only the talents of women artists, collectors, and intellectuals, but also to highlight works in Milan’s museum collections that depict women: a way to bring women’s commitment, creativity and intuition to the public’s attention, with the dual purpose of enhancing the museums’ heritage and promoting a culture that recognizes the important contribution of women to history and contemporary society.

As every year, the MuseumCity Association curates some of the most important special initiatives: the MUSEO INVISIBLE meeting, through which museums have the opportunity to introduce themselves and tell their stories to the public, will be a podcast that will be uploaded to MuseoCity channels starting on Friday, July 31; from July 31 to August 2, the SECRET MUSEUM itinerary, curated by Gemma Sena Chiesa, dedicated to The Ladies of Museums, which allows each participating institution to introduce one or more works from its collection inspired by the feminine world in a very broad sense: from women depicted in art to female collectors and donors of works of art, from testimonies of the love for art of great female personalities to the attention devoted to equal opportunities in business and scientific collections; on Saturday, August 1, the international conference entitled Women and Innovation in the Contemporary Museum, broadcast with videos uploaded to the Association’s Youtube channel: a public debate dedicated to the best practices of all those women engaged in changing the common perception of the museum, making it a welcoming and educational place for diverse audiences.

The Invisible Museum podcast and videos of the International Conference will also be available online after the three-day event.

In addition, this year’s edition will be enriched by Museo Diffuso, an itinerary to get to know the Museums participating in Milano MuseoCity: an APP with all the information about the participating museums, the works of art on the facades of Milan’s 20th-century buildings and more than 40 works of Street Art in augmented reality, granted by MAUA-Museo Arte Urbana Aumentata, to discover city itineraries outside the center and the ordinary art circuits. Among the Milanese buildings: Palazzo Castiglioni, in Corso Venezia, with sculptures by Ernesto Bazzaro; Palazzo dell’Informazione, in Piazza Cavour, with bas-reliefs by Sironi; and Palazzo Mezzanotte, in Piazza Affari, with sculptures by Leone Lodi and, inside, decorations by Gio Ponti.

The event is promoted by the City of Milan | Culture and realized in collaboration with the MuseoCity Association.
