Rome hosts third edition of "Creature," urban creativity festival

For ten days, the streets and squares of Rome’s City Hall VII will host installations, workshops, talks and debates for the third edition of Creature 2019, a festival of urban creativity, conceived and curated by Open City Roma and first place in thepublic notice Contemporaneamente Roma 2019, promoted by Roma Capitale Assessorato alla Crescita culturale, in collaboration with Siae.

Space for words is the theme of the 2019 edition of Creature, which for three years has been promoting art as a privileged tool for urban regeneration, offering unprecedented views of the city and altering uses and meanings of its spaces, so as to bring out contradictions and hint at new possibilities. This year the protagonists of the urban workshops will be words, precious elements for understanding contemporaneity.

Written, drawn, thought, narrated: words evoke meanings, projects, visions of the world. And they best tell the story of who uses them and the contexts in which they recur. Particularly well telling of our time are words like “emergency,” “frontier,” and “hybrid”: the three terms, complex and full of pregnant ambiguity, on which we have chosen to reflect with art and not only during the days of the festival. In fact, these very three words will be the common thread throughout the festival.

Three installations created by Etaoin Shrdlu Studio and Piano B Architetti Associati will translate them into elements of street furniture, bringing graphics and architecture together in the setting up of three neighborhood newsstands - at Largo Pannonia, Largo Vercelli and Piazza Lugo - already in themselves monuments to the word, now victims of digital progress. A series of urban tours will trace these words in the spaces of the city, deciphering its messages hidden by its chaotic everyday life: we will reflect on the duplicity of the word “frontier” in front of the Aurelian walls, while domus, sepulchres and columbaria will re-emerge from the past and the many languages of ’900esque architecture in the San Giovanni neighborhood will be deciphered. But above all, guiding us and involving us in the interpretation of these three keys to access contemporaneity will be the many talks and debates with “experts of the word”: women writers - selected by InQuiete, a popular Roman festival of women’s literature - but also journalists, sociolinguists, urban planners, reporters, video makers and graphic designers. A plurality of outlooks meet and confront each other with the citizenship, promoting knowledge of the territory and its social dynamics and a reflection on the relationship between urban spaces, sociality and art, a theme that has always been dear to Open City Roma, the associative reality that organizes the initiative and has been working on these issues for years.

In continuity with the two previous editions, the Creature Prize is proposed once again, which calls for 1,000 euros to enhance the city realities that make the word a tool for research, cultural production and territorial involvement (associations, bookstores, small publishing houses, etc.). The prize will go to fund one of their unpublished projects, such as a publication, a series of meetings or workshops, the organization of an exhibition.
