The Sansevero Chapel in Naples offers an extraordinary and dedicated opening to the blind and visually impaired public on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, with the tactile visit The Wonder at Hand. The initiative allows participants to explore the museum’s main works through touch, offering an experience approaching art and art-historical heritage. The event, with free admission, has been designed with the specific needs of visitors in mind, with the aim of making a cultural heritage of international significance more accessible. The tour will allow visitors to touch the famous Veiled Christ and the bas-reliefs of Modesty and Disenchantment, works that complete the iconographic project conceived by Prince Raimondo di Sangro.
The tactile tour is organized by the Sansevero Chapel Museum in collaboration with theItalian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired - ETS APS, Naples Territorial Section. Admission is by reservation only, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with last admission at 6:30 p.m. Reservations can be made by phone at 081.5498834 during the hours indicated, or by email at uicna@uici.it, subject to availability.
Participants will be welcomed by the museum’s educational services staff, who will provide an introductory description of the Sansevero Chapel and Prince Raimondo di Sangro’s role in the creation of the monumental complex. Afterwards, blind guides from the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired will lead the tactile exploration of the main works, with a route formed according to the instructions of Roberta Meomartini, an expert tour guide in tactile routes, in collaboration with the museum.
To allow a direct approach to the works, the fence that normally protects the Veiled Christ will be temporarily removed. Visitors, equipped with latex gloves, will be able to touch the marble surfaces of the sculpture, perceiving its textures and forms, before moving on to the bas-reliefs placed at the foot of the Modesty and Disenchantment. The initiative also stipulates that each blind or visually impaired visitor may be accompanied by a family member, companion or guide dog. During the visit, wearing jewelry, watches or other objects that may damage the works is prohibited. At the end of the tour, participants will be guided to the Sacristy, where they will receive a free special braille guidebook, created by the Sansevero Chapel Museum in collaboration with the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired, as a support for independent enjoyment of the museum’s contents.
