The Peggy Guggenheim Collection's May Public Programs offered as part of the ongoing exhibition Surrealism and Magic are dedicated to fluidity and transformation. Find out about the appointments in the article.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection ’s Public Programs scheduled from April to September have started: events and side activities proposed on the occasion of the exhibition Surrealism and Magic. Enchanted Modernity, running until September 26, 2022, which aim precisely to address the themes of the exhibition, dedicating each month to a different theme. The events will be completely free of charge and are made possible thanks to the Araldi Guinetti Foundation, Vaduz.

The month of May is dedicated to fluidity and transformation. It starts with Living with Leonora, scheduled online on Zoom forMay 11 at 6 p.m.: During the webinar, journalist and writer Joanna Moorhead, cousin of surrealist Leonora Carrington, will explore with exhibition curator Grazina Subelyte some of the events in the artist’s story, including episodes, links and connections to Peggy Guggenheim’s life. Joanna Moorhead knew her cousin only during the last years of her life, but she spent enough time with her that she can now share untold stories of their friendship. Participation is free after registering on the museum’s website.

Instead, on May 15 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. is the children’s workshop Hybrid Beings in a Genderless World. Loplop is Max Ernst’s alter ego, half man half bird. Leonora Carrington often identifies herself as a white horse, while Leonor Fini sees herself as a sphinx, a symbol of enigma. Children are invited to discover the magical beings who populate the exhibition and who do not respond to the binary dynamics of society, but belong to a fluid narrative without categories and labels. Children’s participation in Kids Day is free with online reservation required; Guggenheim Family Card holders can register for the workshop by calling +39 041 2405429 Monday through Friday.

On May 17 at 6 p.m. there will be an online meeting on Zoom in which the curator will be in conversation with Cecilia Alemani, artistic director of the 59th Venice Biennale: the themes of hybridization and metamorphosis in art will be explored, not only with reference to the Surrealist movement, but also investigating the latest artistic research concerning the contemporary. Free participation upon registration on the museum’s website.

Finally, on May 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., young people between the ages of 16 and 25 will instead be the protagonists of the workshop Naked lobsters: undisciplined musesÉ™, curated by Call Monica, a collective born out of the Theatre and Performing Arts course at the Iuav University of Venice. Call Monica will accompany participants in a two-day workshop intended to be a journey of self-knowledge and an analysis of the gaze, understood as a cultural construction and vector of power. The workshop will end with a performance in the spaces of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Participation in the workshop is limited to fifteen participants, and is free upon registration.
