OnSaturday, June 22, Art Night Venezia returns to Venice for its 13th edition: the initiative, long since entered the official calendar of the European Art Nights, conceived and coordinated byCa’ Foscari University of Venice in collaboration with the City of Venice and under the patronage of the Veneto Region. This edition will be in the sign of Marco Polo, seven hundred years after his death. The city’s cultural institutions, more than a hundred of them, will participate as always in the program that offers free cultural experiences, visits, concerts and events to the public.
It will start at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, from the main courtyard of Ca’ Foscari with the traditional inauguration in the presence of Antonio Marcomini, Pro Rector Vicar of Ca’ Foscari University Venice, Paola Mar, Councillor with delegation to the University of the City of Venice, Silvia Burini, Scientific Direction of Art Night Venice, Angela Bianco, Coordination of Art Night Venice.
This year the Cafoscarino focus for ArtNight is on the major exhibition Uzbekistan: the Avant-Garde in the Desert, the first exhibition in the West of masterpieces from the Museums of Tashkent and Nukus, which also displays four works by Kandinsky. An event that is part of the Marco Polo celebrations, underscoring a hitherto unseen aspect of the cultural dialogue between East and West: starting with the exhibition, ArtNight 2024 intends to emphasize essential aspects and enrich the enjoyment of the exhibition route with specific events. This is the sense of the program that will be held at 10:30 p.m. in the Courtyard of Ca’ Foscari Avant-garde in the desert: images, textiles, sounds, words.
It will begin with a large-screen projection of the video introduction to the exhibition Uzbekistan: the Avant-Garde in the Desert, followed by a site-specific audio-visual performance with Paolo Nori, writer, translator, critic The Language of the Avant-Garde and with Improvvisazioni. Musical Translations from the Avant-Garde Orientalis with Ensemble Musicafoscari (Arianna Moro soprano, Silvia Cattarinich soprano, Ottavia Carlon violin, Chiara Trabujo cello, Federica Lizio alto saxophone, Daniele Goldoni trumpet, Francesco Rossi electric guitar, Silvia Tesser keyboard, Eugenio Cereser keyboard).
Also dedicated to the Uzbek exhibition will be, at the exhibition spaces, the 6:30 p.m. Ca’rte lab for children Trovami! L’avanguardia nel deserto, a treasure hunt led by Ca’ Foscari students among the works in the exhibition. It will be possible to visit the exhibition Uzbekistan: The Vanguard in the Desert with guided tours without reservations (until available seats are reached) at 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. (special visit with the exhibition curators), 8:30 p.m., 9 p.m.; 11 p.m.
Among this year’s novelties is the Sleepless Video Art Night: an entire night, starting at midnight that Ca’ Foscari dedicates todigital art by opening the doors of the historic Santa Margherita Auditorium at 00:30 a.m., to begin screenings at 1 a.m. until 6:30 a.m. Art Night Venezia in collaboration with CIFRA therefore presents an exciting marathon of thirty unedited Videoart works on the theme of travel, created by international artists, which will lead viewers to discover new worlds and unexplored territories, both real and fantastic. For the occasion, CIFRA, a collective of visual artists, collected the works of artists who through a dedicated call were invited to (re)imagine the story of Marco Polo and to show new worlds and unexplored territories, both real and fantastic through video realizations.
Two other cafoscarine exhibitions will be on view for the occasion: Lena Herzog’s ANY WAR ANY ENEMY (open until July 2024), an exhibition project curated by Silvia Burini and Giuseppe Barbieri hosted at CFZ’s Tesa 1, Ca’ Foscari Zattere, Fondamenta Zattere al Ponte Lungo 1392, with hours 18-23.30 which presents to the public the latest work of Lena Herzog, a multidisciplinary and conceptual American photographer and artist, and CYFEST15 International Media Art Festival: Vulnerability, Venice (through July 2024) at GAD-Giudecca Art District, which focuses on imagining new perspectives regarding the apparent (anti)fragility of the human and non-human body, bio and cyber environments, histories and futures, encounters and relationships with the world in transition.
There will also be guided tours organized by the Ca’ Foscari Tour to explore the University’s main campus, at 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Reservation required cafoscaritour@unive.it
Once again this year, Venezia News is collaborating with Ca’ Foscari on the occasion of Art Night 2024 with the digital map (downloadable via the QRcode found on all posters and event posters) to move among the many initiatives of the night of art.
Art Night doubles and offers in the garden of the Cafoscarina headquarters in Palazzina Briati on Sunday, June 23, Le petit déjeuner ARCOBALENO in collaboration with MALìPARMI (reservations required: artnightvenezia@unive.it). In addition to the canonical competition, there will be guided tours, workshops for children, and the Mamme per Caso Vocal Group, an all-female singing group from the Venice Lido that has been in business for nearly 30 years, will play.
