At Eternity’s Gate, Julian Schnabel ’s film starring Willem Dafoe as Vincent Van Gogh (Zundert, 1853 - Auvers-sur-Oise, 1890) in the last years of his life and, more specifically, those spent in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, in southern France, when his bond with Paul Gauguin (Paris, 1848 - Hiva Oa, 1903) became contentious and stormy. The great Dutch painter would later be locked up in a nursing home and commit suicide when he was only thirty-seven years old, yet to be fulfilled.

“A film about painting and a painter, and their relationship with infinity,” explained Schnabel “It is not an ’official story,’ but my version of what I consider the essential moments in Van Gogh’s life.” The cast also includes Rupert Friend (as Theo van Gogh, Vincent’s brother), Oscar Isaac (as Paul Gauguin), Mads Mikkelsen, Mathieu Amalric (as Dr. Paul Gachet, the doctor who treated van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise), Emmanuelle Seigner and Niels Arestrup.

At Eternity’s Gate is the second film Schnabel has dedicated to an artist, twenty-two years after Basquiat, which focused on Jean-Michel Basquiat. The 110-minute film on van Gogh will be released in theaters on January 3, 2019.
