50 unique Picasso ceramics star in major exhibition at MIC in Faenza, Italy

The MIC in Faenza will exhibit fifty Picasso ceramics from the Musée National Picasso-Paris from November 1, 2019 to April 12, 2020.

The MIC in Faenza will host from November 1, 2019 to April 12, 2020 the major exhibition Picasso. The Challenge of Ceramics. Curated by Harald Theil and Salvador Haro with the collaboration of Claudia Casali, the exhibition will display fifty unique pieces from the collections of the Musée National Picasso-Paris.

The sources of Picasso’s inspiration will be analyzed, starting with the artifacts in the museum’s collections: classical ceramics with black and red figures, Etruscan buccheri, Spanish and Italian folk ceramics, 15th-century Italian graffito, iconography from the Mediterranean area (fish, fantastic animals, owls and birds), and terracottas from pre-Hispanic cultures that will be displayed in an unprecedented dialogue with Picasso’s ceramics.

A special section will be devoted to the relationship between Picasso and Faenza: thanks to Tullio Mazzotti of Albisola, by Gio Ponti and Mr. and Mrs. Ramié, who requested some artifacts from Picasso for a Faenza exhibition, there are several pieces by the artist at the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche. In 1950 came the first oval plate depicting the dove of peace; other plates with faun heads and vases arrived the following year, including the large vase The Four Seasons, graffitied and painted with depictions of four female figures.

Accompanying the exhibition will be documents and photographs, never on public display, from the museum’shistorical archives and a historical video by Luciano Emmer from 1954, entitled Picasso in Vallauris.
