A major exhibition in Florence dedicated to the most famous animated films, with original drawings

Palazzo Medici Riccardi hosts the first exhibition entirely offered by MUS.E: dedicated to animation cinema, it displays more than 500 original drawings from the most famous films.

The halls of Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence welcome until October 17, 2021 the exhibition AniMA. The Magic of Animated Cinema from Snow White to Goldrake on which more than five hundred original drawings from the best-known and best-loved animated films are on public display for the first time.

Curated by Federica Fabbri, Luca Chiarotti, Sandro Cleuzo, Francesco Mariotti and Francesco Chiatante and promoted by Città Metropolitana di Firenze and MUS.E, in collaboration with Accademia NEMO of Florence, this is the first exhibition offered entirely by MUS.E: illustrations made during the pre-production and production stages of Disney masterpieces such as Sleeping Beauty in the Woods, Snow White, Robin Hood, The Charge of 101, The Sword in the Stone and many others, of the famous TV series signed Hanna-Barbera, of famous Japanese anime and of many other films such as In Search of the Enchanted Valley, Fievel lands in America and Anastasia are visible to the public. AniMA will also trace the history of animated films, thanks to unique pieces that enrich the exhibition path: from the frame of the first animation in the modern sense, Gertie the Dinosaur, which dates back to 1914 and is one of about one hundred remaining worldwide, to the iconic Mickey Mouse films of the early 1930s, to the recent concepts of the latest 3D films.

The works on display come from the collection of AniMa Florence, entirely dedicated to animation and housed in the premises of the NEMO Academy, which holds an extraordinary treasure trove. Supported by continuous donations from international artists such as Sandro Cleuzo, Don Bluth, Gary Goldman and Yoichi Kotabe, the collection holds about eight thousand pieces including sketches, layouts, concepts and storyboards produced by Disney, Dreamworks, PIXAR, Don Bluth and Hanna Barbera studios.

“We are proud to contribute to enhancing one of the most fascinating palaces of the Florentine heritage with an exhibition of great originality and at the same time of strong connection with the territory,” said Matteo Spanò, president of MUS.E. “An exhibition that inaugurates a new exhibition cycle, and that is part of a broader plan to enhance Palazzo Medici Riccardi, entirely by MUS.E.”

“We are really happy to share with the public the incredible heritage we possess,” added Luca Chiarotti, art director and teacher of the NEMO Academy. “To finally put our endless archive of drawings on display means for us to share the emotions that looking at these works gives us every time. They are collections from the authors themselves and encapsulate all the love for this art and the behind-the-scenes that most people don’t know about.”

The exhibition itinerary also includes an educational section that will allow children and adults to discover the behind-the-scenes of animation: character studies, preparatory drawings for environments, color experiments and much more.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog published by The City of Clouds with a preface written by internationally renowned artists.
