A photo exhibition in Rome on the Protection of Unesco World Cultural and Natural Heritage

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, Rome's Palazzo delle Esposizioni and some of the libraries of Roma Capitale are hosting the photographic exhibition Near/Far.

The Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome and some libraries of theIstituzione Biblioteche di Roma Capitale are hosting from October 28 to November 27, 2022, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, the photographic exhibition Vicino/lontano. Journey to Discover the Cultural and Natural Heritage of Immigration in Italy, promoted by the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, Roma Culture, Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, Istituzione Biblioteche di Roma Capitale and the National Research Council-Institute for Mediterranean Studies.

In the five different venues, a total of more than four hundred shots taken by photographers from the countries with the greatest migratory flow to Italy are on display. the photographers have told through images the cultural and natural heritage of their countries of origin, building a dialogue with the institutional photographs of UNESCO World Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage sites. All photographs were selected following five themes: Human Settlements and Movements of Peoples; Spirituality; Feasts, Celebrations, Crafts, Food and Artistic Expressions; Natural Environment, Geo and Bio Diversity; and Portraits.

The objective of the exhibition is to encourage discussion and mutual understanding between migrants and Italian citizens, recalling that UNESCO’s Declaration on Cultural Diversity states that “in our increasingly diverse societies it is essential to ensure harmonious interaction between people and groups with plural, varied and dynamic cultural identities, as well as their willingness to live together.”
