Academy of Spain holds first exhibition in Rome dedicated to Joaquín Sorolla

The Real Academia de España en Roma welcomes the exhibition "Joaquín Sorolla, flashes of light and color" from March 21 to June 11, 2023. This is the first exhibition dedicated to the Valencian painter in Rome.

From March 21 to June 11, 2023, the Real Academia de España en Roma welcomes the exhibition Joaquín Sorolla, flashes of light and color, curated by Blanca Pons-Sorolla and María López Fernández. This is the first exhibition dedicated to Sorolla in Rome.

The centenary of his death will be celebrated in 2023. During his lifetime he traveled to Italy on several occasions; in Rome he spent a period between 1885 and 1889. This exhibition, as part of the Academy’s 150th anniversary, aims to investigate the relationship between Sorolla, the artistic circles of Rome and the Academy of Spain.

On display are more than two hundred small-format works, selected from the more than two thousand that the artist painted, most of which are preserved in the Sorolla Museum in Madrid. After having been presented in Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona, this exhibition comes to Italy for the first time, thus making this important aspect of the Valencian painter’s production known.

Of note is the presence of a series of “notes” painted in various places in Italy, demonstrating the painter’s connection with Italy.

The exhibition has free admission.
