All the refinement of rare found majolica, at the Museo Civico Corboli in Asciano

The Museo Civico di Palazzo Corboli in Asciano exhibits the rediscovered majolica: nine extremely rare pieces of great value and refinement, executed between the 14th and 15th centuries.

Nine precious ancient pieces, of the highest value given their extreme rarity, and all of great refinement: these are the rediscovered majolica pieces, dating from between the 14th and 15th centuries, which from Saturday, September 16, 2017, are on display at the Museo Civico Archeologico e d’Arte Sacra di Palazzo Corboli in Asciano, in the province of Siena. All the majolica tiles come from an archaeological excavation that took place between 2015 and 2016 in Asciano’s Piazza del Grano and unearthed about 15,000 ceramic fragments, from various periods, dating from the 14th century onward. The restoration, supported by theArca Cultural Association, which also took care of the arrangements inside the Museo Civico, thus returned some very interesting majolica to public use. It also made use of techniques such as three-dimensional relief, and was carried out in “open lab” mode, that is, allowing the public to witness the operations. Among the rediscovered majolica is a unique piece depicting a bird cleaning its leg, in copper green and manganese brown on a white malt background (pictured below).

The exhibition project is titled, in fact, Le maioliche ritrovate (The rediscovered majolica), and has received the contribution of the Municipality of Asciano and Banca Cras in collaboration with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici and the Arte dei Vasai della Nobile Contrada del Nicchio (Art of the Potters of the Noble Contrada of the Niche). The exhibition is part of the Lauretana 2017 program of events (in fact, the town of Asciano is located on the Via Lauretana) and the MuSST project - Museums and development of territorial systems, under the aegis of the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena. This is a very interesting event that is linked to an art, that of ceramics, typical of the area.

The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of the Museo Civico di Palazzo Corboli: in September, October, April, May and June every day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. In November, December, January, February and March on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. In July and August every day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets: full 5 euros, reduced 4 euros (for over 65s, children aged 6 to 12, families consisting of 2 adults + 1 or more children, residents of the municipality of Asciano), free for children under 6, disabled and accompanying persons, residents if accompanying guests.
