From Sept. 22, 2026, to Jan. 24, 2027, the Palace of Versailles will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola ’s film Marie Antoinette with an exhibition hosted at the Petit Trianon, a place deeply connected to the figure of the queen and used as a setting for several scenes in the film.
Having become a true cult favorite over time, the film Marie Antoinette helped profoundly renew the image of thelast queen of France, played by Kirsten Dunst, transforming her into a cultural icon capable of combining history, modernity and pop imagery. Winner of theAcademy Award for Best Costume Design in 2007, the film is distinguished by Sofia Coppola’s unmistakable aesthetic, which weaves together historical accuracy, modern elements and a refined palette of pastel tones. From this combination was born an authentic “Marie Antoinette style,” whose influence continues to be visible today in the world of fashion, design, and photography.
Set up in the Petit Trianon, the exhibition curated by Laurent Salomé and Hélène Delalex will take visitors behind the scenes of the filmmaking process. Original costumes designed by Milena Canonero will be on display, along with accessories used during filming, storyboards, annotated scripts, set photographs and set sketches. Through a number of projections, the audience will also be able to review sequences from the film shot in the very same settings, thus living an immersive experience in which the historical space dialogues with its cinematic reinterpretation.
