An exhibition on Segantini and nature in Arco, his hometown

The Galleria Civica in Arco, Trentino, is hosting from May 20 to October 22, 2023 the exhibition "Horizons of Light. Segantini and the Divisionist Landscape: Nature, Memory and Symbol," dedicated to Segantini's relationship with nature. A way to get to know the artist in the museum of his hometown.

From May 20 to October 22, 2023, with the exhibition Horizons of Light. Segantini and the Divisionist Landscape: Nature, Memory and Symbol, the Galleria Civica di Arco (Trento, Italy) investigates the particular predilection Giovanni Segantini (Arco, 1858 - Monte Schafberg, 1899) had for nature and landscape, presenting works that span a broad chronology, starting with the trials conducted in Brianza and closing with Symbolist research. Alongside the figure of Segantini, the exhibition presents nodal works by the respective protagonists of the Divisionist season, offering visitors the chance to compare different and personal investigations on the theme of landscape, in a path aimed at restoring an exemplary physiognomy of those researches as well as the temperament of one of the most significant seasons of Italian art.

Three thematic sections-Nature, Memory, Symbol-propose an overall look at the possible declinations of the genre of landscape in those intense decades of pictorial elaboration, offering the possibility of approaching well-known and lesser-known works that are difficult to see and compare directly as a whole.

Flanking the figure of Segantini are in fact the names and works of painters Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, Angelo Morbelli, Emilio Longoni, Vittore Grubicy De Dragon, Luigi Conconi, Giovanni Sottocornola, Cesare Maggi, Carlo Fornara, Benvenuto Benvenuti, Guido Cinotti, Baldassarre Longoni, Carlo Cressini, Alberto Bonomi and Matteo Olivero.

The works featured in the exhibition come from the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz (including the famous Il ritorno dal bosco, among others), the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan, the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria Collection and the Matteo Olivero Pinacoteca in Saluzzo (CN), as well as numerous private collections.
