Antonio Ligabue's masterpieces on display in Asiago

Through Oct. 30, Le Carceri Museum in Asiago dedicates a major exhibition to Antonio Ligabue, curated by Marzio Dall'Acqua and Vittorio Sgarbi.

Until October 30, 2022, the Museo le Carceri in Asiago (Vicenza) presents the exhibition Antonio Ligabue. Un altro mondo curated by Marzio Dall’Acqua and Vittorio Sgarbi, organized by Augusto Agosta Tota, promoted by the Municipality of Asiago in collaboration with Fondazione Archivio Antonio Ligabue di Parma with the patronage of Regione Veneto, Provincia di Vicenza and Unione Montana. The exhibition aims to present the art of Antonio Ligabue through more than seventy works including paintings, drawings and sculptures, including masterpieces such as Pascolo montano (1928), Gattopardo con teschio (1933), Diligenze con castello (1952), Tigre ass assalita dal serpente (1953), and Autoritratto (1954).

An excursus through the main themes of Antonio Ligabue’s art: from the domestic animals of his early years to the wide-open jaws of tigers, monstrous lions, snakes, and birds of prey snaring prey or struggling for survival. The nature painted by Ligabue is the scene of relentless violence. Forests, plains, fields and barns are sites of animal combat. Also present are some self-portraits, in which Ligabue paints his own existential pain, shouting it out with the urgency of an intense and feral sensibility. Ligabue’s is a tormented soul, which finds its own voice and redemption through painting.

From his paintings we see anguish, loneliness, the instinctive struggle for survival and to obtain one’s place in the world, the visceral desire for love and sociality. The immediacy of his paintings and the expressive force of his painting make for a special bond between his works and the viewer. His popularity is due to his ability to communicate and convey aesthetic ideals, feelings, and visions from the world.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with reproductions of all the works on display, curators’ essays and institutional texts.
