At the GAM in Turin an exhibition on the fascination of the night spanning five centuries. With about 100 works

At Turin's GAM, an exhibition explores the night as a site of technical experimentation, scientific observation and poetic introspection, from the early 17th century to contemporary times. October 29, 2025 through March 1, 2026.

From October 29, 2025 to March 1, 2026, the Turin Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art (GAM) will host the exhibition NIGHTS. Five Centuries of Stars, Dreams, Full Moons, curated by Fabio Cafagna and Elena Volpato. The exhibition brings together about one hundred works from prestigious European institutions and from GAM’s own collections, offering a journey through five centuries of art and thought.

The exhibition aims to explore the night as a place of technical experimentation, scientific observation and poetic introspection, from the early seventeenth century to contemporary times. Ordered according to a thematic criterion that follows, in its main development, the natural flow of artistic epochs, the exhibition takes the visitor on a journey into the fascination of the nocturnal as a place of ambiguity, mystery and discovery, in a constant dialogue between rationality and sentiment, science and visionary.

The exhibition journey begins with the seventeenth-century research of Galileo Galilei and Maria Clara Eimmart, in dialogue with the works of Johann Carl Loth, Giuseppe Antonio Petrini and Antonio Canova. The journey extends to the contemporary cosmic visions of Vija Celmins and Thomas Ruff. Ample space is devoted to theRomantic and Symbolist nineteenth century, a time when the night becomes a privileged ground for the exploration of the soul, and to the dreamlike twentieth century, where darkness is populated with inner images and visionary dreams. In this dialogue between eras and sensibilities, the nocturnes of Victor Hugo, Odilon Redon, Franz von Stuck, František Kupka, Marc Chagall, Jackson Pollock and Joseph Cornell meet.

The exhibition is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Mondays.
