At the Lu.C.C.A. more than one hundred shots by renowned photojournalist Werner Bischof

The Lu.C.C.A. - Lucca Center of Contemporary Art welcomes from September 7, 2019 to January 7, 2020 the exhibition Werner Bischof. Classics.

The Lu.C.C.A. - Lucca Center of Contemporary Art presents to the public an exhibition dedicated to one of the greatest photojournalists of the 20th century, Werner Bischof. From Sept. 7, 2019 to Jan. 7, 2020, 105 shots with images ranging from 1934 to 1954 by the famous Swiss photojournalist will be on display as part of the exhibition Werner Boschof. Classics.

Curated by Maurizio Vanni and Alessandro Luigi Perna, the exhibition is organized by Lu.C.C.A. and Omina in collaboration with Werner Bischof Estate and Magnum Photos, in partnership with Photolux Festival.

The exhibition, divided into eight sections, aims to tell Bischof’s story, his passion for aesthetics, research, ethical and moral values, and his ability to represent the dichotomies of development and poverty, business and spirituality, modernity and tradition.

Visitors will travel through Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Indochina, New York, Mexico, Panama, Chile and Peru and will be projected into the years of Magnum Photo’s birth, photojournalism and Bischof’s evolution into an artist in search of expressive freedom. Some photographs were discarded at the time because they were considered lacking originality, but later these gave way to awards, exhibitions and publications.

Present in the exhibition will be one of his most famous shots: the Peruvian child playing the flute, which the artist encountered in 1954, in the Andes Mountains in Peru, shortly before he lost his life prematurely in a car accident.

“After Depero, our season continues with another unconventional character: Werner Bischof, a master of reportage, but above all an artist capable of investigating man’s relationship with nature and with himself, a seeker of truth, archaeologist of human feelings, narrator of the extraordinary everyday, passionate about life,” comments Maurizio Vanni, curator of the exhibition and general director of the Lu.C.C.A.
