Bergamo, at Carrara Academy the first-ever exhibition on Simone Peterzano, master of Caravaggio

From February 6 to May 17, 2020, the Carrara Academy in Bergamo is hosting the exhibition 'Titian and Caravaggio in Peterzano,' the first monographic exhibition dedicated to Simone Peterzano.

TheCarrara Academy in Bergamo is dedicating an exhibition to Simone Peterzano (Venice, c. 1535 - Milan, 1599), who was a pupil in Venice of Titian and a master in Milan of Caravaggio.

Curated by Simone Facchinetti, Francesco Frangi, Paolo Plebani and Maria Cristina Rodeschini, the exhibition, titled Titian and Caravaggio in Peterzano, not only wants to make this little-known artist known, but, thanks to important loans, wants to draw attention to an extraordinary chapter of painting between the 16th and 17th centuries, trying to give some answers.

The exhibition itinerary is enriched by masterpieces by Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese and Caravaggio to rediscover the work of Peterzano and return him to the dimension he deserves, among the most illustrious protagonists of Italian art history.

Nine sections are planned: the training and youth of Simone Peterzano, in the shadow of Titian; iconography of music; erotic subjects; Angelica and Medoro: literary echoes and reflections; Peterzano and the practice of drawing between Veneto and Lombardy; the arrival in Milan: the altarpieces for the Barnabites; the Milan of Carlo Borromeo; Peterzano’s Lombard affirmation; Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.

The exhibition opens from February 6 to May 17, 2020.
